Summer 2024/2025 - Warrnambool

Shipwreck Bay Holiday Park

3rd January - 11th January 2025
Section 19, site 49

I have been a bit slack with photos this year....

This is our 8th Year in a row staying at Shipwreck Bay, this year it ended up being for 8 nights.

As we had our site from the 2nd we moved from Port Fairy early on the morning of the 3rd, Granny & Pa were already there an set up. After we set up our van, I headed to the supermarket to stock up on food and the rest went down to the beach to get a head start on swimming and I joined them later.

On Saturday David, Madi, Oliver and Aleiyah arrived and were staying at the Caravan park across the road. We were blessed this year with a lot more beach days, in other years we are lucky if we even get 1 but Saturday was hot again so we headed to the beach.

In the evening we went to the Warrnambool Grey Hound seaside festival

We all had a go on the bucking bull

We had some dinner

Spent some time at the mobile zoo

and watched some greyhound race

We went to this last year and again this year and it is a fun night our with lots of activities for the kids as well as the greyhound racing.

Sunday was another warm day so we went back to the beach again, we also did the kids annual name in the sand photos

Monday was golf day, so Harry and Jayden came down and the big boys headed off to golf.
Granny, Madi & I took the kids for a walk to the skate park and dropped the older kids off for a skate

kayleigh & Nash walked with us around to the breakwater and we had a coffee & ice-cream

We rode to the end of the pier

and then went back to the skate park for a little while.
In the afternoon we went for a swim in the caravan park across the road where David & Madi are staying and then had a BBQ for dinner.

After all these years coming to Warrnambool we have never been to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum & Village. So Tuesday was the way we finally check it out and it was better than i expected.

"Here lie the stories of hundreds of ships, their crewmen and passengers whose lives were claimed by the Shipwrecked Coast in the 19th Century. Stories passed on by the lucky few who survived the journey to start a new life in a foreign land, vowing never to set foot on a ship again.

Without the modern day comforts we take for granted today, their lives were challenging and tough as they relied on the ocean for resources and communication. Flagstaff Hill is a place to remember and experience the stories of these early battlers who laid the foundations for life as we know it today."

It starts off with the museum which holds a large collection of shipwreck artafacts from some of the 200 ships that are know to have sunk along the nearby coast line.

Then it is out to the village which has many replica buildings and provides a taste of what life was like for the Ship Wreck Coast's first European Settlers.

There was a scavenger hunt for the kids with lots of items they had to find around the village and tick off their list & also a bakery where we had scones and drinks.

We headed back that evening to see the Sound and light show
It begins with a multi screen immersive theatre to be transported back to the 19th century

Then you join the lantern tour through the cobble stone streets to the wharf theatre

The sound and light show brings to life local aboriginal creation stories, The whaling history of the South West Coast and the story of the famous Loch Ard shipwreck
The stories are told through projections on to a nine metre water wall.
We have been to sound and light shows in other places before & I enjoyed this one the best. It was a late night and we didn't get home until almost midnight. (and I didn't take any photos)

The next day it was the girls turn to head to the hot springs, we booked the breakfast package which had a buffet breakfast for the springs. Unfortunately Aleiyah wasn't feeling well but Granny, Madi, Kayleigh & I had a great morning.

That night we headed down to the carnival as Granny wanted to go on the Cha Cha with the kids and it was their last night but unfortunately this year the Cha Cha wasn't there! The kids had a go on the dodgem cars, we had planned to go to the carnival on Friday with other friends so the kids saved their other rides for then

The walk back...

January 9th & everyone else headed home today after an early swim at the beach.
In the afternoon Michael & Mason went fishing & caught a little fish & I took Mason & Kayleigh for a play at the playground across the road.

The next night was our last night and our friends that we stayed with in Port Fairy came into Warrnambool & we went to the summer market and had a look around and some dinner and then we headed to the carnival.

It was another fun Summer that passed way too quickly and we cant wait for next year.
